Sorry Jonah

Thoughts and condolences to Jonah Goldberg, who said goodbye to Cosmo the Wonderdog today.  Pets are family, with attitudes and personalities that are every-bit as distinct as their humans'.

A Good Saturday

Had an absolutely awesome Saturday this weekend - spent it in Newport News with my sister Katie & bro-in-law Brandon*, visiting our good friends Heather & Doug.  Katie & Brandon made a weekend of it, but I live close enough that I can drive down and back again in a single day without too much hassle, so I did that.

We toured and tasted the Williamsburg Winery, which I'd heard of, but never actually been to.  It was nice - a gift shop with some neat things, a pretty old (for America) and large wine cellar, lots of history, a relaxing restaurant with good food, and, of course, some wine tastings.  I have to say that I wasn't super impressed with the ones we tasted ... some of their wines just taste like damp musk to me.  Katie insists it's the stainless steel fermentation, but I've had plenty of stainless steel wine that doesn't taste like that, and I really think it's the wine.  Blech.  First winery I've been to in years that I didn't actually buy anything.

We also went Shop Kicking!  That's right - when Heather introduced me to it earlier this year, she created a monster.  And you know what?  I think I'm ok with that.  It's fun, rewarding in it's own way, and you actually do get something for nothing!  Or at least, I've gotten something for nothing - about $30 of Starbucks gift cards just for walking into stores and scanning certain items.  Not too shabby.  I'm sure I'll eventually tire of it, but in the meantime, Kick away!  About $20 in a little over a week ... Boo Yah!

Finally - it's a 75-minute drive home, so I had a lot of time to think.  And it dawned on me that with all the crap that life has thrown at my family this summer, there's certain drama we don't have to deal with.  No fights with neighbors, nobody getting arrested (both of which we witnessed on Saturday), great friends who love us, animals who love us too, and the ability to enjoy an afternoon at a winery if we want to.  I'd trade that all away in a heartbeat, of course, but really, we are pretty lucky and it's good to remember that every once-in-a-while.

* As I was typing this, I realized we have no good word in English for the family unit that consists of your sibling and her spouse.  "Sister Katie and brother-in-law Brandon" is just plain awkward and too long.  We need a single word, like "sposling" or something.  As in, "I spent the day with my sposlings Katie & Brandon."  Ok, now that you're thinking about that for the rest of your day, my work here is done.
